Lately I've been having great fun using shortcut keys to control vCenter speeding up administration. There are very useful combinations, like <Ctrl>-<Shift> and <Ctrl>. Here is a list which I use a lot:
General views
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<V> |
Switch to Inventory -> VMs and Templates |
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<H> |
Switch to Inventory -> Hosts and Clusters |
<Ctrl>-<Shift>-<D>
|
Switch to Inventory -> Datastores
|
<Ctrl>-<Shift>-<N>
|
Switch to Inventory -> Networking
|
An other handy is find:
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<F> |
Switch to Inventory -> Search (but it Finds for you) |
When a VM is selected, you can do quick cool stuff:
| <Ctrl>-<B> |
Start VM (like boot it) |
| <Ctrl>-<D> |
Shutdown VM (so a soft shutdown by VMware Tools) |
| <Ctrl>-<E> |
Power Off VM (hard shutdown - the end) |
| <Ctrl>-<T> |
Reset the VM (Terminator) |
| <Ctrl>-<Z> |
Zuspend VM (I know - bad English) |
Three shortcut keys you can always use regardless the focus:
| <Ctrl>-<S> |
Schedule a new task |
| <Ctrl>-<M> |
Create Alarm |
| <Ctrl>-<P> |
Define Permissions |
Other Shortcuts are Context Sensitive, meaning that it depends on where your focus is (what is selected) what kind of action it does. All those are using the <Ctrl> key combination. Things like creating a new folder, new VM, new host (but is quite context sensitive, it doesn't make sense to create folders in VMs, or create a new vApp on a host):
| <Ctrl>-<N> |
New VM <- Love this one |
| <Ctrl>-<A> |
New vApp |
| <Ctrl>-<H> |
New Host |
| <Ctrl>-<L> |
New Cluster |
| <Ctrl>-<O> |
New Resource Pool |
| <Ctrl>-<F> |
New Folder |
| <Ctrl>-<D> |
New Datacenter |
Here is the rest of the <Ctrl>-<Shift> list:
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<E> |
Switch to Management -> Events |
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<I> |
vCenter Server Settings |
<Ctrl>-<Shift>-<L>
|
Switch to Administration -> Licensing
|
<Ctrl>-<Shift>-<M>
|
Switch to Management -> Maps
|
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<O> |
Switch to Administration -> System Logs
|
<Ctrl>-<Shift>-<P>
|
Switch to Management -> Host Profiles
|
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<R> |
Switch to Administration -> Roles
|
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<S> |
Switch to Administration -> Sessions |
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<T> |
Switch to Management -> Scheduled Tasks
|
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<U> |
Switch to Management -> Customization Specifications Manager
|
| <Ctrl>-<Shift><Z> |
Hmmm Debug Stuff. I would recommend not changing this! |
And do not forget the <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Ins> for sending a <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to the OS in the VM and a nice one: <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Enter> to make the console session full screen (use <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Enter> to exit again). <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<X> to exit the console session.
Others is more navigation stuff:
| <Alt>-<Arrow Left/Right> |
Go back and to in the history, which is a very useful feature and often misunderstand, take a good look at it! |
| <Alt>-<HOME> |
Go Home <- Also very useful!!! |
| <Ctrl>-<TAB> |
Scroll through the tabs |
| <Ctrl>-<Shift>-<TAB> |
Scroll back through the tabs |
There you go - a quite complete list with shortcut keys. By the way, the interface itself exposes a lot of shortcut keys. Some are quite useless, others very useful. And I think there are some missing: like "edit settings..." from the VM. So I sure hope VMware reads this and add that feature - save me some clicks.
Have fun using the shortcut keys and make your Virtual Infrastructure administration more time efficient.
